Ramadhan Appeal

What Is Ramadhan

Ramadan is a month of fasting and abstaining from things considered impure for the mind and body. Those partaking in Ramadan abstain from food, drink and impure thoughts between the hours of sunrise (Fajr) and sunset, allowing them instead to focus on prayer and connecting with Allah (SWT).

Fasting allows the individual to understand the pain and suffering of millions worldwide who live their lives in poverty and famine, leaving the participant feeling more grounded and grateful for all that Allah (SWT) has given them. During Ramadan, Muslims give loads of charity, including Zakah, Sadaqa, Iftaar and other charitable donations in cash and Kind. At the end of the month, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated with loved ones. Eid is a great time of feasting and celebration for Muslims, with gifts exchanged between loved ones.

Why Is Ramadhan Important?

Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) in A.D. 610. The timing of revelation is given special significance and is known as Laylatul Qadr or the Night of Power.

To commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an, Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan – aiming to grow in spirituality by building a stronger relationship with God. We do this through fasting, praying, reciting the Qur’an, making their actions purposeful and selfless, as well as refraining from lying, gossiping and fighting.

What Does Quran Say About Ramadhan

There are volumes upon volumes worth of information on Ramadan. Quran has mentioned Ramadhan many times, including  O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:185

Allah has made Laylat al-Qadr in this month, which is better than a thousand months, as Allaah says…The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees, there is peace until the appearance of dawn.” — Al-Qadar 97:1-5
