“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) ordained Zakat Al-Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions and provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakah for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer, but it is a sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.”

(Dawud)

Zakat-ul-Fitr is compulsory for all Muslims regardless of age or financial standing. The only exemption is for those who do not have one sa’ (approximately 2.6 – 3kg) of their staple food more than their needs.
