Zakah-ul-Fitr (Fitrana)

“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) ordained Zakat Al-Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions and provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakah for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer, but it is a sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.”

(Dawud)

Zakat-ul-Fitr is compulsory for all Muslims regardless of age or financial standing. The only exemption is for those who do not have one sa’ (approximately 2.6 – 3kg) of their staple food more than their needs.

Kaffara

Deliberately breaking a fast for any other reason means that a Muslim must pay Kaffarah to stay holy and righteous in the eyes of Allah (SWT).

In cases of breaking the fast deliberately, there are three possible things a Muslim can do to pay Kaffarah. These are:

  • Free a Muslim locked in the bonds of slavery
  • Fast for two consecutive months
  • Pay to feed sixty people

A simple enough reason for the payment of Kaffarah is that it is commanded by Allah (SWT) through the scriptures. Defiance of such is a sin, and every Muslim has to attempt to lead a life as free from sin as possible.

Another reason is that Ramadan is a special and righteous dictation in the Islamic calendar. It is the time that reminds us of the importance of charity, generosity, and the spirit of giving. The month’s time reminds us that all we have is ultimately a temporary gift from our Creator. Therefore, it is only apt and right that our recompense should come in giving if we fail to obey his commands.

Kaffarah reminds us that we have duties both to Allah (SWT) in obedience and submission, the literal meaning of the word Islam, and duties to one another. This allows us to move ourselves to heights of holiness and righteousness, just as we are commanded to.

This year, pay your Kaffarah with us and help thousands of less fortunate people in Jammu & Kashmir enjoy the Holy month this Ramadan.

Fidya

“And as for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old man), they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskeen (poor person) (for every day). But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast is better for you if only you know”[al-Baqarah 2:184]

Fidyah is a compulsory charitable donation that must be made if you cannot fast during Ramadan. Paying Fidyah for not fasting is most commonly necessary for the elderly or sick, who cannot fast safely due to medical concerns or issues. In this situation, making a payment to support and feed the poor is necessary instead – and this is called Fidyah.

The damaging effects of conflict and pandemics have placed many families in Jammu and Kashmir in desperate conditions. These people suffer from malnutrition, weakness, and illness without adequate food supply. Pregnant women, children and the elderly are particularly at risk.

For people like this, fasting has no break. Every evening, there is no iftar to keep them going or refuel their bodies. Their hunger goes on and on. With your support, we can continue to help those most vulnerable and in need. Donate your Fidyah today and make a difference.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Whoever gives iftaar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.” Tirmidhi

People of Jammu and Kashmir are going through very difficult times, and you can help them by donating your Fidyah amount to Mercy Universal Inshallah.

Zakah

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It requires Muslims to give 2.5% of their qualifying wealth each year to help Muslims who need it across various categories. Zakat is a spiritual duty and a vital part of the Islamic social welfare system.

Being a pillar of Islam means that Zakat is mandatory for Muslims, along with the other four sacred pillars of prayer (salah), fasting (sawm), pilgrimage (Hajj) and belief in Allah and His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) (shahadah). For every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth over a certain amount – known as the Nisab – he or she must pay 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat. “…and those in whose wealth there is a recognised right, for the needy and deprived” (Qur’an 70:24-5)

The purpose of Zakat is ultimately to increase faith and devotion to Allah (God). By giving Zakah, Muslims cleanse their own wealth. Zakah helps keep the economy flowing by freeing people from burdens and giving them the chance to reach their potential.

Mercy Universal ensures all your Zakah reaches the most deserving people in Jammu & Kashmir.
